Servant Minded
Edmond students will be working hard over Spring Break to help those in need. From middle school to college, hundreds of Edmond students are taking their break time to make a difference. Whether going out into the world, the nation, or the city, these students are opting to spend their days off making a positive impact.
If you happen to be in any of these areas, or would like to support their efforts, here are some of the places you’ll find local students serving others.
The Regional Food Bank
The seventh and eighth graders from Crossings church will be helping out at The Regional Food Bank, as well as helping with programs and clean-up at Wings and Peppers Ranch. “They’ll be up and out by 9 am and working hard until 4 pm,” says Angie McDowell, middle school ministry coordinator for Crossings students.
Nashville Urban Mission
High schoolers from Crossings are heading out east for a week of serving the city of Nashville through Nashville Urban Missions. Partnering with the Center for Student Missions, 45 students and nine adults will be serving this local ministry by helping various city organizations, such as YMCA or the Boys and Girl’s Club.
Capital Hill Elementary School
Students from Memorial Road Church of Christ are reaching out to their OKC student body by spending their Spring Break helping with repairs at Capital Hill Elementary School building. Approximately 40 college students will be painting the walls, creating murals, making gift baskets to leave for the teachers, building benches for kids to sit on in the hallway, creating a reading area with furniture and shelves, and performing any repairs that are needed.
Acuna, Mexico
Middle and high school students from The Well church will be traveling with 40 adults to Acuna, Mexico to help build homes with Casas por Cristo. With many residents in poverty, some creating homes out of trash, the church mission trip will be spending the week building two small houses for local families in need. “It’s one of those world changer trips,” says Cole Taylor, lead pastor at The Well. “When you go, your whole worldview changes and you don’t come back the same.”
Dallas, Texas
Approximately 20 middle school students from St. Luke’s United Methodist Church will be traveling to Dallas to work with Trinity River Mission over the break. Students will be working with smaller children, around elementary age, to provide tutoring, mentoring, and reading help.
Toronto, Canada
High schoolers from St. Luke’s will be spending their break up north in Toronto, Canada, working at the spring break day camp hosted by Urban Promise. The camp focuses on serving underprivileged youth in low-income neighborhoods in their city.
