Former Edmond Mayor Dan O’Neil poses with Happy the Hippo during his mayoral campaign in 2007. The Blue Hippo has been popular with locals and Route 66 travelers since 1991 when Bud Fisher placed the hippo on South Broadway in front of his glass business. In the 1990s, Happy was “hippo-napped” several times as a prank, appearing atop Memorial High School, in a pond at Oklahoma Christian, and even at a wedding before being filled with concrete to prevent future pranks. The Edmond History Museum will celebrate the landmark with the Blue Hippo Festival on June 6 in Stephenson Park, featuring Route 66-themed games, music, and plenty of blue.
