The Oklahoma economy is strengthening

Written by Rebecca Vidacovich on 06/14/2010

A leading economic gauge for Oklahoma climbed ever so slightly in May, marking the fifth straight month that the gauge has been above growth neutral.

Oklahoma’s Business Conditions Index inched upward to 59.8 last month from April’s strong 59.7, according to a report released Tuesday by Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.

The index, based on a monthly survey of supply managers, is considered growth-neutral at 50. A higher number points to economic expansion over the next three to six months, while a number below 50 indicates contraction.

The May Business Conditions Index for the nine-state Mid-America region advanced for a sixth straight month, expanding to 64.2 from April’s 61.7.
